But does it come in black?
So early 2020, I’m sat cross-legged on my sofa, laptop on my knee scrolling through pages and pages of fabrics. I have a million other demands on my time; a list of emails I ought to send a mile long, and a covid induced disaster to navigate. The world has gone mad, everything is up in the air for all our clients, and my brain is obsessed with finding the perfect fabrics for an all black patchwork quilt.
I’m stuck. A million websites filled with glorious prints and I just can’t hit buy. Fat quarters are relatively inexpensive right? But when each website only has one interesting black option, your costs quickly double. Each quarter brings it’s own postage charge when it’s the only black offering in the inventory.
Why are there infinite options for interesting colourways and prints of every conceivable colour apart from black?
Fast forward 9 months and I’m still looking. The quilt now has touches of colour in it as it’s physically impossible to gather enough tonal prints and interesting textures. As an aside, I’m now also looking for dress fabric. Our bridal fabric suppliers only stock plains and I really want more everyday fabrics. Every search brings up the same old options. I don’t want a colourful floral print on a black background and I’m not one for novelty prints, so where do alternative dressmakers buy their fabric?!
We are now trying to choose the fabric for our Willow envelope and just can’t find what we want. A million hours later, a shit ton of research and some serious rabbit-hole digging and I’ve found a wholesaler who publishes the print designers look books online.
OH MY GOD there are so many glorious and interesting black options in their designers’ collections right next to the technicolour options I’ve seen on EVERY website so far… so why oh why do these deliciously dark designs not make it to the stores?
And so began our idea… to source and gather and offer up for sale only the darkest of fabrics, notions and haberdashery… we’ll have all the shades of black, pitch, night, ebony and onyx, in every texture and weave we can find, with a smattering of dark and alternative prints.
Finally… a valid reason to shop fabric guilt free!
